I remember it like it was yesterday, the night it all went down.
Celia was in her garden talking with M, Eva sitting next to me, facebooking on her phone, Robyn flirting with all the girls at the party and I was sort of overdosing on gin and tonics. The night before was still present in my mind.
I head towards M and Celia. As I get closer I can hear what they are talking about.
– I don’t want things to get out of hand!
– I know, I don’t want that too but we should expect it will get out in the press. We have to do some damage control, some of them will fall without being guilty.
– I don’t care, I cannot be responsible for this, maybe we should let Eva take the fall. She is an aristocrat anyways and she’s an emotional wreck, everybody knows that, it won’t be that much of a fuss, another scandal, she is used to causing them. Celia bursted.
– No, you can’t let her take the fall for something like this, she will be ruined and after all, this is our fault, all of us! I shout at her.
– Celia I don’t agree with this. Ana is right, it’s all our fault, we can’t let her take the fall for this alone. Don’t push it!
M turns around and leaves.
– I’m not gonna be involved in this! Celia says to me, desperately.
– Celia, you caused it, yes, it’s true, we all agreed but you started it!
I’m gonna rip hear head off.
– Celia, if you do this to Eva I’m not gonna back you up this time, be sure of that. I’m getting back to the party.
…
That was the moment when everything started to fall to pieces. Our world started to seem more like a goth Melrose Place and we began to look like old, broken dolls who constantly fight to eat the candy.
We needed a year to let all her intrigues and schemes die down. A year in which we all agreed to keep the silence.
Celia took the blame for that dreadful event, was forced to get out of town and we thought that things will go back to normal.
I started paying more attention to my professional life, Eva stopped partying and drinking that much, Robyn made peace with his grandmother, M went to Toscana for the summer and all of us stayed strays for a few moths.
But now, a new season begins, with new parties, gossips, intrigues and most of all, with all of us in one place, this apparently big city. Celia is not dumb. I finally realized now, she wants to start the same chain of events she did when that dreadful night took place. That’s why she’s hosting this party at midnight, that’s why it takes place at her chateau and most of all, that’s why she sent Robyn to Eva and me with the same dress!
She hates me because I left her and took Eva’s side, she hates M for destroying her credibility, Robyn began to be her puppy after we “broke up” – which reminds me, how did that happen? – and everybody else might easily be her minions too.
This passed through my mind in the last 7 minutes…I’m still at the bistro, I just sipped another gin tonic.
– You are too glamorous for this time of day.
I turn my head and there he was. Looking like the whole world was in his hand. Freshly back for an expedition in Kenya – the born to be wild spirit and my fiance, Toma.
